Actual time – Real time
The urge to understand this moment, the now, is a result of my experience the past years. Therefor the core
question and narrative of my study is; what is time ‘the now’, the time we experience, really? How would one
give shape to ‘the now’ make it tangible and understandable not only to myself but also others my view on
‘the now’? Through not only approaching this in a theoretical fashion, but combining this with a qualitative
exploration of a series of illustrative works and my own interpretation and reflection on ‘the now’ I aim to
answer the above mentioned questions.
By answering the two sub questions: how do I perceive ‘the now’ and how do I give this visual form, the main
research question, what ‘the now’ is, will be answered. The loss of someone valuable to me and the realisation
that a concept as love and our internalisation of time does not go in stride with a timepiece have led me to
strive to become more aware of this difference and their effect on my day-to-day life. The Maastricht Academy
of Media Design and Technology provided me with the tools to shape thoughts and concepts like the above
into form of visual communication.
In short: my personal experiences and revelations I translated into a visual medium. It goes without saying that
this will always remain just my own interpretation of such abstract concepts, my view on ‘the now’ is not that
of others. It might well ring true with others but is not a given fact, neither the perception of others nor their
way of approaching ‘the now’. It is a gift to myself and view on someone as an illustrative artist and individual.
The visitor, the viewer is the artist in the sense that they will form their own conception of the installation the
moment they perceive it. I will not be present besides the installation to provide the narrative, which remains
my own. The view of ‘the now’ is and will ultimately remain the viewer’s own.
I used the colors of it’s spectrum which you daily see by day light. In a metaphorical way I put my vision in
pictures and in illustrations.
