Tempo Doeloe

How can we pass on the intangible heritage of a country that no longer exists? Thomas Birsak collected narratives from different generations of Indo’s, categorized and based on the domains that make up living cultural heritage.
He visualizes these ‘lost and found’ recollections of the Dutch-Indies culture in the Netherlands in Batiks. Based on and inspired by the design of this traditional technique, designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, Birsak makes these collected memories tangible.
